Information Nutrition Label
Synopsis
The Information Nutrition Label is a research initiative that investigates how transparency can increase users' agency in digital information environments. Inspired by nutrition labels on food products, it aims to make relevant characteristics of online information visible in a concise and understandable form, enabling users to make more informed and reflective decisions about their media consumption.
Initially proposed for news articles, the concept has recently been extended to social media through the Feed Nutrition Label. Instead of characterizing individual posts, the Feed Nutrition Label summarizes the composition of a user's personalized feed, providing insights into aspects such as topical diversity, emotional tone, content sources, persuasive intent, and algorithmic recommendations.
The project explores transparency as an alternative to purely restrictive responses to concerns about social media use. Rather than limiting access to digital platforms, Information Nutrition Labels are designed to strengthen users' ability to understand, question, and manage algorithmically curated information environments. By making otherwise invisible characteristics of personalized feeds visible, the labels encourage more conscious and self-directed media use while preserving users' freedom of choice.
